School Food Garden in Den/ui
The first food garden for the Village Schools is planted.
Thanks to a generous donation of N$60,000.00 from Tony Pupkewtiz, a food garden is being developed in the village of Den/Ui. Den/ui School is the first of the five lower primary village schools that Save the San is building in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy with support from various funders. The garden is at the site where the first new school will be built in early 2020.
We have partnered with the Nyae Nyae Development Foundation of Namibia (NNDFN) who have considerable experience gardening in the Conservancy. The NNDFN has worked with the community over the past months to design the school vegetable garden and train interested people in the village The school vegetable garden is set up and will be tendered by two Ju/’hoansi groundsmen, Jordan /Ui and Kgao Isac .
Fruit and Vegetables
The school garden will provide must needed nutrition for school learners. We hope to soon harvest vegetables like: spinach, beetroot, onions, carrots, tomatoes, pumpkins and kale.
Several fruit trees have been planted in and around the vegetables, which should provide: oranges, naatjies and papayas.
Ongoing Training
Training by Helini Amutenya and Gabriel Hipandulwa from NNDFN is not just for the school groundsmen, but anyone in the village wanting to grow a food garden. At the outset budding new gardeners were taken to see a successful garden in the village of Gaogoma for inspiration and encouragement. Further and ongoing training will take them through the seasons, teaching how to develop and maintain productive gardens and demonstrate the benefits of creating seedbanks to enhance diverse production and sustainability.
Jeunesse Park, founder and CEO of ‘Food &Trees for Africa’ for 25 years, facilitated access to the funding from Mr Pupkewitz, who has supported tree planting and food gardens for many years. She is working with Save the San on the development of food gardens at the Nyae Nyae Village Schools and adding her vast experience with permaculture and community projects.
